The mere existence of nuclear weapons and the possibility that their availability might lead to their use seems self-defeating. As Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev stated, “a nuclear war must never be fought and cannot be won." https://nsarchive2.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB172/
Pacific countries were some of the early adopters of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. These include Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Aotearoa-NZ, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
The USA's proxy in the Pacific Islands, Australia through its Morrison-led LNC government is a staunch supporter of nuclear weapons as used by USA and its allies, "reflecting the vested interests of its alliance partner the United States, and a misplaced reliance on outdated and opaque doctrines of extended nuclear deterrence." https://tinyurl.com/wpy2b6uk The Australian Parliamentary Opposition, Labor Party "voted in favour of MP Anthony Albanese’s resolution setting out that Labor, in government, would sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons." https://tinyurl.com/jn35kyb4
Other Pacific countries yet to ratify the Treaty include Marshall Islands, Micronesia (FSM), PNG, Solomon Islands and Tonga.
It's time for all Pacific islanders to support the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). So get your parliamentarians, and get you country on board to join the #nuclear ban treaty: https://jointheban.icanw.org/
